Printer Says "Non-OEM Cartridge": What Each Message Means

Troubleshooting · 2026-10-24

Read the exact wording on the printer first. "Non-OEM cartridge" is a warning — press continue and it prints. "Toner cartridge not detected" is a genuine read failure. The two have nothing in common, and treating them the same wastes a lot of time.

The three messages

MessageWhat it meansCan you print?
"Non-OEM cartridge" / "Genuine cartridge recommended"The cartridge is read correctly; the printer recognises a non-original chipYes — press Continue
"Toner cartridge not detected" / "No toner cartridge"The printer cannot read the cartridge at allNo
"Paper jam in toner area" / "Front cover open"Mechanical — the cartridge is not fully seated, or a shipping protector is still fittedNo

Most "my compatible cartridge does not work" cases are the first row. The cartridge works perfectly; the printer is simply informing you it is not original. That is informational, not a fault.

Six checks, in order of hit rate

1. Power cycle — 30 seconds off

Printers read the chip during power-on initialisation. Many intermittent detection failures clear on a cold restart. It costs nothing, so do it first.

2. Reseat the cartridge

Push until it clicks and the release lever closes fully. Half-seated cartridges are extremely common after a first replacement, and the symptom is identical to a dead cartridge.

3. Check for shipping protectors

New cartridges ship with a plastic strip or a protective cover over the drum. It is easy to leave one on, especially on a model you have not used before. The printer will report no cartridge because the contact is physically blocked.

4. Clean the chip contacts

On the cartridge there is a small PCB with gold contacts. If toner dust or finger grease sits on it, the printer cannot read the chip. Wipe gently with a dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use solvent.

5. Check the firmware version

If the same cartridge code worked before and now does not, suspect a firmware update. Printer makers push updates that change the expected chip response. This is the single most common cause of a cartridge failing after months of trouble-free use.

The fix is a cartridge with the correct chip version for your current firmware — not a different cartridge model.

6. Confirm the model is genuinely correct

Check the part number on the box against the label of the cartridge you removed. A cartridge that will not seat properly cannot be read, and no amount of troubleshooting will fix a wrong model.

What to have ready when you contact your supplier

  • The exact message text on the printer screen
  • Printer model and firmware version (usually in the settings menu)
  • The cartridge code on the box
  • A photo of the cartridge label

With those four, a supplier can usually identify whether it is a chip version issue in one exchange. Without them, diagnosis is guesswork.

Common questions

My printer says "non-OEM cartridge". Is it broken?

No. That message means the cartridge was read successfully and the printer has identified a non-original chip. Press Continue and printing proceeds normally. It is a notification, not an error.

Why did my compatible cartridge stop working after a firmware update?

Printer firmware updates can change the response the chip must provide. The cartridge itself is unchanged; the acceptance criteria moved. The solution is a cartridge with the chip version matching your new firmware.

Can I disable the non-OEM warning?

On most models the warning can be dismissed each time, and some enterprise models allow it to be suppressed in service settings. It cannot be disabled permanently on consumer machines, and it does not affect functionality.

What if the printer says "no toner cartridge" even with a genuine one?

Then the fault is in the printer, not the cartridge — most often the chip contact reader or the cartridge detection switch. That is a service issue rather than a consumables issue.
